Our Program
Our founder, Dr. Natalie N. Summerville, taught for over 25 years and earned her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction from George Mason University and continued a passion for innovative education. At The Grand Magnolia School, we approach learning in new ways rooted in established approaches. We are inspired by Reggio Emilia, Angela Duckworth, Carol Dweck, Maria Montessori. During the summer, we keep an active, rotating list of adventures that help children maintain their learning through engaged play. We incorporate ample time in nature, creativity, and experiential activities. Our approach works well for children who thrive in a cozier environment that feels like an extension of home with plenty of individualized attention.

We have found that children learn by seeing and doing. Children get individualized academic support, snacks, outdoor time, and rotating enrichment to bring learning to life in vivid color. We treat every day as an adventure with enrichment foci including Spanish and other languages, drama, cooking, dance, soccer, yoga, STEM, golf and many others across the year.

Grand Magnolia strives to educate each child as a whole being, because we know each child is capable of incredible.

How many children do you enroll for the summer?​
​
We are intentionally small and believe in the power of individualized attention, learning, and care. Our school consists of no more than 10 from Kindergarten through 5th grade.

What is your daily schedule?

Our summer school adventure camp runs from 9.00a-4.00p Monday through Friday.

Are you a Montessori/Reggio/Quaker/Waldorf school?
​
No. We like to think of Montessori, Reggio, Quaker, and Waldorf approaches to education as close cousins of our own.
​
We share similar philosophies on child development regarding the empowerment of students as active agents in their own learning in a way that prioritizes creativity and free thinking. We find that families and children who gravitate to these approaches also resonate with our style as well.
